London’s Oldest Fast Food

Pie and mash is London's earliest and most standard fast food.

We met owner Joe Cooke, great grandson of Robert Cooke, who opened East London's first pie and mash store in 1862. Joe taught us how to make a conventional pie and mash, total with parsley sauce, called liquor.

    1. @Jack_Templar123nah this is comically British. This is how the rest of the world sees England lol

  1. Apparently it all comes together very nicely 🙂 love a good pie so nice man

    1. @HdHd-hp6qz  tbh the color of it is just alluring lol. Love a green sauce

    2. @ lukeblue2089 I don’t care what colour it is I’m interested in it’s enhancement qualities to the dish. Which parsley as a herb is very subtle of a flavour.

    1. The mash never looks good and the pies don’t look like much, it’s the liquor with it that makes it good.

  2. Such a brilliant episode. Love going back to watch it to see if I can realise how softly he holds the pies

  3. Ive been and eaten from there. As a kid i lived in east london and my mother enjoyed a pie and mash on a friday. She would get a double serving and nail the lot. She is 5’6 and 10 stone lol. Monster. The pie and mash doesnt taste of much tbh, the liquor is ok. But it’s a quick, easy, filling meal. And the community around the shop is like a pub. Everyone knows everyone. I still pop in whenever i go to east london, i go a diffrent place now. But it still brings back good memories and fills me up. The jelly eels are disgusting though. Fk that. 😂

  4. How many restaurants of that style have been left? They was famous then. Now, the preferences changed.

  5. And that’s how the famous quote came into existence — “As blunt as the British breakfast”
    😂😂😂

  6. I would be so pissed off if I went to a pie and mash shop and they smothered my pie with liquor! it needs to go in the middle of the pie and mash

  7. For everyone who hasn’t tried this if you do cut the pie open whack aload of chilli vinegar in it but of white pepper all over and it’s top notch

    1. Yeah man I’ve watched the original whole video of this place and he talks about the vinegar. It looks awesome to me, if I ever visit London I’m definitely going to try it. What do you think about the eels? I feel I’d have to try it too, even though it looks a bit strange!

  8. I’ve been there, and i still think about those pies from time to time, they were so unbelievably good

  9. Not so cheap nowadays but still a all time favourite love the pies something just special about them… 💯👌
