William Padilla-Brown made waves as the first American to grow cordyceps, an unusual orange mushroom that grows from the larvae of bugs. He promotes growing your own mushrooms as a means for both food and education.

Wash them w a slightly damp paper towel they won’t lose flavor
I’m on board with the concept of this video but this guy sounds so god damn pretentious it kinda kills the vibe.
I don’t see how you came to that conclusion. He’s just passionate about it
@danielscott7985 no
Imagine hating this hard to comment 😂
@ColdCheesesteak god forbid somoene comment their opinion in a comments section.
How does he come across pretentious?
The heck is the difference between a “citizen scientist” and a scientist…?
Does he publish his findings publicly without a paywall or something?
I thought every scientist is more of a citizen effort than a specialized one, like maybe the military or something?
im guessing he is just some dude that likes to call himself a “scientist” but isn’t actually one.

Citizen Scientist: Someone too stupid to actually go and attend a real college or university
Me i consider myself a Football Scientist
@beetlejews youve left multiple comments on this video
Here’s an actual definition
“A citizen scientist is a member of the public who participates in scientific research, collecting and analyzing data to help professional scientists. These volunteers contribute to projects across diverse fields like ecology, astronomy, and medicine, using methods from app-based photo uploads on platforms like iNaturalist to simple home-based tasks, ultimately increasing the scale and scope of scientific knowledge and conservation efforts”
The way dude was smiling at the shrooms in the beginning, looks like he had a few of the hippie kind of shrooms😂
The real gateway 🍄🟫
A citizen scientist is someone who partners with professional scientists to contribute to their research. A couple of people in here are calling this guy who’s clearly just passionate about this topic and wanting to use it to make the world a more equitable place “pretentious” but can’t even look up what it is he does before deciding they don’t like it. Odd. Wonder why that is.
He’s a joke deal with it
@beetlejewswhat is your problem with him?
@jordyncarter9649 might be his skin color?
Citizen scientist is simply someone who collects data or does experiments but is not affiliated with an institute. This spans benign dudes like this guy and dangerous quacks like the Geier brothers. He might even have some relevant degree, who knows. You have to fund your work somehow, but at least you don’t have to deal with the hassle of scientific publishing.
What makes him a scientist again? Is he board certified and vetted? I’m not saying anything against or for him just wanna know facts .
He’s a CITIZEN scientist. Not a scientist.
@tavishlopez9354 so we have labels for a being just a ‘curious individual’? 😂
@CDankies yes. The label for a curious individual is…a curious individual. While they share some qualities, a citizen scientist is different from simply a curious individual. If you want more information about how they’re different, I suggest you look it up first. It’s not a difficult concept to understand. I promise.
@tavishlopez9354 Yes Ma’am I ‘understand it’, (well I think I do lol).
To be fair, I guess, I was trying to point out that the term can/is used as a pretentious and vapid title.
Being a good steward of the resources we’ve been blessed with shouldn’t have classism imo.
@CDankiesoh ok. I agree that being a steward of our resources shouldn’t involve classism. It’s just when you were asking about what made him a scientist and whether he was board certified, that’s classist language so it sounds like you are actually being pretentious. Whether that’s your intention or not, that’s how you come off.
Citizen scientists aren’t just people who are curious in something and study but they have protocols they follow to help scientists with their research projects. Citizen scientists are volunteers who contribute to research projects, which is different from just being a regular stewards of resources. Citizen scientists collect data, among other things.
I appreciate people who are taking their time to contribute positively to our world. Whether they are stewards of resources, citizen scientists, or scientists.
Cordyceps ? 😬🤣
He gets paid from federal grants. Stop all grants immediately! He can be a citizen burger flipper.
😂😂😂
Why?
I wish I got federal grants! I do also run a burger concept. The grants would be dope tho
You sound like someone who lives in their mother’s basement rent free.
@MycoSymbioteI’d do what everyone else does with grants. Buy drugs and gamble.
He GOT to be doing the right thing because it’s a lot of hate on here😂 Keep SHINING bruh you exposing the roaches🤣
This is the beginning of the Last……….of us
I was thinking the SAME thing 😂
Those fried dumplings 🥟 at the end didn’t look half bad. Isn’t fried food just the best?
Not washing because you can’t visibly see the dirt to the eye is wild. But hey he’s the scientist not me 🤷🏽♂️. Dope stuff
Mushrooms absorb water if you wash them you will change the entire texture of them making them more slimy. I also grow them so I know where they come from.
these are likely lab grown, on a wood substrate, they don’t come in contact with dirt
Enthusiasm for the fungi, makes you a fun guy.
Americans deserve the humiliation that’s coming because of the kind of anti-intellectualism displayed in these comments
Thanks for sharing! Love to know more about your research on fungi. Have a great interest in them.
And pardon the so-called intellectuals challenging your value as of those stupid pieces of paper qualifications really mean much. The intellectual morons of this world always like to challenge, persecute and even execute innovators and people who actually do real good.
This guy is gonna feast well if the cordyceps zombie apocalypse happens
I like this content let’s get this guy back on the show for more episodes
Didn’t they say some can produce cancer?
