Yellow Sheet Cake
RECIPE COURTESY OF CARLA HALL
Level: Easy
Total: 5 hr (includes cooling time).
Active: 15 min.
Yield: One 9-by-13-inch cake.

Active ingredients.

6 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into tablespoons and softened, plus more for the pan.
2 cups versatile flour, plus more for the pan.
3/4 cup buttermilk.
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract.
1 1/4 cups sugar.
2 teaspoons baking powder.
1/2 teaspoon salt.
2 tablespoons vegetable oil.
3 big eggs, at space temperature level.
Poured Caramel, dish follows.

Put Caramel:.

8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter.
1 3/4 cups sugar.
1/2 teaspoon salt.
1 (12-ounce) can vaporized milk.

Instructions.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Butter and flour a 9-by-13-inch cake pan.

Integrate the buttermilk and vanilla in a medium bowl. Combine the flour, the sugar, baking powder, and salt in the bowl of a stand mixer. Beat with the paddle attachment on low speed till well blended. Include the oil and beat up until evenly distributed. With the machine running, add the butter 1 tablespoon at a time and beat up until totally incorporated. The mixture will look like coarse sand.

Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition and scraping the bowl periodically. While beating, add the buttermilk mixture in a sluggish, stable stream. Beat just till smooth. Put the batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly.

Bake up until a tester inserted in the center comes out tidy, about 25 minutes.

Let cool totally in the pan on a cake rack. Pour as much caramel as preferred over the cake.

Put Caramel:.

Set the butter in a big saucepot over medium heat. When it's midway melted, add the sugar and salt. Cook, stirring with a wood spoon, up until the mixture is dark golden brown. It will look rough and the fat will separate from the sugar and then return together.

Eliminate from the heat and add the evaporated milk while whisking. Take care! The caramel will bubble up. Scrape up any sugar that's stuck to the bottom of the pan. Make certain the sugar is entirely dissolved.

Set over low heat and cook, blending typically, up until very smooth and velvety, about 1 hour. Get rid of from the heat and cool completely, stirring periodically.

Cook's Note.

The cake keeps at space temperature level covered securely for approximately 3 days.

  1. Our (brother and I) birthday cake was always German Chocolate Cake and our favorite birthday picture with the cake in the picture is our 18th (we could legally drink at 18) and it’s because mother thought that she had 1 and 8 candle but she had a 1 and 6 so it 16 + two house candles. We went to Baton Rouge to party with our sister and we got so drunk my brother sweated out his alcohol at the LSU football game which they lost but we had a good time

  2. Our maternal grandmother was the best cook and baker and she let us each have a batter but the bowl was hers. Our paternal grandmother wasn’t much of cook or baker but she loved us too

I’m not a yellow cake fan, but I know there’s always something to learn from Carla.

Putting the ingredients along the side, so you don’t forget. That’s awesome, I’ve made that mistake!
