My grandaddy, James Monroe Duncan (Uncle Jimmy to the patrons), owned a country store on Landon Road in Gulfport, Mississippi in the 1960s. Co-cola came in returnable glass bottles in those days. Embossed on the bottom of each glass bottle was the name of the city where it was made. This made for a bit of fun wagering – whose bottle was made in the farthest location – whose was the closest? Turning 70 today, I miss my grandaddy and wish I could return to Landon Road Grocery for a cold co-cola out of the “drink box”.
I don’t remember calling Coke Co-cola, but I know in Texas we’d ask you…wanna Coke…and most would ask…what kind?…,every soft drink was a Coke.

My Grandma made the best divinity. She got tired of dropping it and placing nuts and came up with a neopolitan layered divinity. She’d separate the batch into two and tint one pink. Then she’d spread one in the pan, layer a giant melted hershy bar with almonds, and then top with the other half of divinity. OMG, was this heavenly! But then, Gran could make shoe leather delectable. Her fried chicken and homemade noodle gravy made the heavens sing. Every meal had fresh homemade bread, and every meat had gravy. I’m putting on 10 pounds just thinking about her cooking.
Fun memories to cherish! My Mom is in hospice now and will turn 96 in October. We grew up enjoying all her labor of love in the kitchen; so many Austrian delicacies, cookies, strudel, a lifetime of delicious food made just for her family. My Momma is the only person I know who could walk into someone’s empty kitchen and put a meal on the table that you would enjoy eating. She too could make shoe leather delectable.

I usually make banana pudding for the holidays. I always use the recipe on the box for the pudding. I’m 63. It hasn’t failed me yet.
We are now on our 4th generation using that recipe. Nothing else will do.

My daughters favorite and Mom always used the vanilla wafer box recipe. Make it every Thanksgiving and Christmas at least. We had the hummingbird cake to mix it up sometimes. Just recently started trying the Coca Cola cake and it has become a favorite!! Georgia girl here. Love my southern roots.
As a Canadian I hadn’t heard of _any_ of these except divinity (my Mom would make it). Vinegar pie is similar to our little butter tarts, just add a few raisins. They’re so sweet your whole throat closes and you can hear an angel chorus. Yes to more desserts from the American south please!
My grandmother would make the Texas sheet cake in a large sheet cake pan, so pouring the hot icing worked really well, it didn’t all run to the sides. That’s what gives it a very special icing experience that you are missing here! The texture is very different, and also the thinner cake.
My mom made Divinity every year for Christmas 🎄 and she’s been gone 30 years so I’m thrilled to have this recipe again.
The speed in which you bake and cook is truly amazing! But no one of us can even keep up!
